The Guayabera shirt is a traditional men's garment known in Central America and the Caribbean, with historical evidence pointing to Cuba as its homeland. The story tells how a Cuban man asked his wife to make him a shirt with many pockets in which to carry Guayaba fruits to snack on and refresh himself while working in the fields. Thus, the four large pockets become characteristic of this garment, and the name Guayabera is derived from the Guayaba fruit. The Cuban design is also seen in the textile lines of pleated seams, known as alforzas, which run vertically along the front and back of the shirt and are reminiscent of the colonial architecture that is iconic to Liberty Island.
