One legend says that the popular "Churchwarden pipes" were named after the churchwardens who stuck their pipes with a long mouthpiece out the window and thus allowed themselves to smoke in the church. According to another theory, they originate from the Ottoman Empire and have oriental roots. And in German, the style is called "Lesepfeife" or reading pipe, because the longer mouthpiece allows an unobstructed view of the book and protects the face from the smoke and heated tobacco.
